Description
Designed by Geraldo de Barros for Hobjeto in the 1970s, this desk reflects the designer’s enduring commitment to rational construction and democratic modern design. De Barros—an influential figure in Brazilian modernism and a founding member of the Grupo Ruptura movement—approached furniture as a system of clear structural relationships and efficient production. His work with Hobjeto sought to translate modernist ideals into accessible, well-engineered furniture that emphasized clarity of form and material honesty.
The desk is defined by a balanced, architectural composition. A broad rectangular work surface is supported by two substantial T-shaped end supports, creating a grounded yet visually open structure. Suspended beneath the top, a compact two-drawer cabinet introduces functional storage while maintaining the desk’s overall geometric clarity. The restrained lines and careful proportion exemplify de Barros’ preference for direct structural expression, where each element is both visually legible and functionally purposeful.
Constructed from cerejeira (Brazilian cherry), the desk highlights the wood’s warm tonal range and subtle grain pattern. The work surface is finished with a white Formica top, providing a durable and practical surface that contrasts with the natural warmth of the wood. This pairing of hardwood structure with laminate work surfaces reflects the period’s embrace of modern materials and industrial practicality.
The desk includes two integrated drawers fitted with circular wooden pulls, offering discreet storage while maintaining the overall coherence of the design. The underside retains its original manufacturing seal, and the piece is documented as having originated from Banco do Brasil, adding a layer of institutional provenance.
The wood has been professionally refinished, and the desk presents in excellent vintage condition, with minor signs of age consistent with its history. A clear example of Geraldo de Barros’ disciplined approach to modern furniture, the piece stands as a thoughtful synthesis of structure, material integrity, and functional design. -
