Description
An unique and elegant Gio design by Gio Ponti, Italian manufacture, 1930s
Gracefully elevated on geometric and extremely slender legs, this desk designed by Gio Ponti stands out for its refined combination of two materials that harmonize in a composition of unmistakable authorship. The rich tones of the American walnut structure contrast beautifully with the warm hue of the parchment that covers the drawers and side panels.
The desk’s profile, with its almost futuristic flair, reflects the broader stylistic exploration that characterized both the art world and industrial design in the early 1930s. Designed to be placed at the center of a room, it reveals—through a surprising play of perspectives—the presence of drawers on both sides. Two faces, one coherent design: a signature of the architect who most contributed to shaping the myth of “Made in Italy.”
An original piece from the 1930s, this desk captures the spirit of a young and ambitious Gio Ponti. It belongs to the innovative period of his collaboration with Luigi Fontana & C., the prestigious furniture company that would soon give rise to Fontana Arte. Period photographs provide solid documentation supporting the attribution and main features of this piece. A certificate of authenticity from the Ponti Archives will be issued to the buyer.
The desk has been professionally restored and is presented in excellent vintage condition.
