Description
'Torbecchia' Dining Table and Bench by Giovanni Michelucci in Walnut for Poltronova, Italy 1965
An architectural dining set with poetic tension, this 'Torbecchia' ensemble designed by Giovanni Michelucci for Poltronova in 1965 reveals a lesser-seen refinement within the brutalist movement. A notable architect and urban planner, Michelucci's work often bridged functionality and humanistic design, and this set exemplifies that philosophy with rare clarity.
Design
Comprising a dining table and accompanying bench, the design reveals a masterful control of proportion and material. Both pieces feature legs angled outward at a uniform pitch, a decision that conveys structural intent and sculptural discipline. The uniformity between table and bench establishes a cohesive language, emphasised by the solid Italian walnut used throughout. This wood, known for its warm hue and rich graining, lends the ensemble a natural depth. Flames and organic patterns vary across the surfaces, enhancing the set’s tactile allure. Michelucci’s branded signature appears discreetly on the long edge of both pieces — a subtle mark of authorship. Though brutalism is often associated with concrete and mass, here it is interpreted with clarity, warmth, and restraint.
A rare expression of mid-century Italian brutalism, this dining set balances visual weight and sensitivity with timeless elegance.
Condition
The set is in very good condition as it has been profesionally restored in our workshop. The tabletop shows a gentle twist and minor wear to the finish.
