Description
This console table is defined by a slender structure and well-balanced proportions. The gently curved front edge of the top softens the linear development, while the long, tapered legs establish a clear vertical rhythm. The piece occupies space with discretion, relying on profile and proportion rather than mass, and conveys a sense of quiet composure.
The structure is executed in walnut, with a warm tone and fine grain visible throughout the legs and apron. The transitions between elements are smoothly resolved, particularly where the legs rise into the shaped apron, suggesting careful hand-finishing. An arched stretcher near the base provides stability while reinforcing the continuity of the design. Small brass sabots finish the feet, introducing a subtle material contrast. The top is in marble, shaped with a softly rounded edge that echoes the curvature of the wooden structure and adds visual depth without overwhelming it.
Produced in Italy in the 1950s, the console can be placed within the stylistic orbit of Guglielmo Ulrich. Although not attributed to a specific design, its restrained formal language reflects Ulrich’s approach to proportion, material balance, and refined detailing. The piece was made by an Italian manufacturer, consistent with the quality of artisanal production of the period.
The console is in very good condition. It has been restored and refinished with a conservation-led approach, preserving the integrity of the walnut and the surface of the marble top. The brass elements show light wear consistent with age, and minor signs of use remain.
