Henning Korch Side Table for C.F. Christensen Silkeborg, Denmark 1960s
-
Description
This side table is the work of Danish designer Henning Korch, who mainly designed tables and cabinets, prioritizing the natural beauty of wood.
Korch, unlike most Danish designers, did not create seating, instead he perfected his craft designing other types of wooden furniture. Nonetheless, as this exotic wood table shows, he kept the quintessential Danish design paradigm in the focus, mixing practicality, modern aesthetics and expert craftsmanship. The solid wood body with the veneered top has an understated, almost minimalist look that was designed with functionality and organicity in mind. Danish designers were experts at incorporating functional elements in a decorative way, serving a dual purpose as a result. Here the box stretchers under the top take up this role. Each connecting point showcases the craftsmanship’s high level as the separate wooden parts appear to flow into each other effortlessly. The gently rounded edges enhance this impression even further. Still, it is the wood’s grain and pattern that serves as the main decorative element with versatile colours.
While not much is known about Henning Korch, his designs speak for themselves. Furthermore, the manufacturer, C. F. Christensen A/S Møbelfabrik, Silkeborg, only worked with outstanding designers, including Illum Wikkelsø and of course, Korch.
