Circular coffee table by Jean Charles, France, early 1970s.
The table is composed of a circular chromed metal section with a smoked glass top and four movable brass segments with smoked glass tops. When joined, the segments can form a second table of the same diameter, or they can be arranged to create a low rectangular table for a long sofa. Jean Charles was born in Paris in 1936 and was one of the most successful designers of the second half of the 20th century, particularly for his collaboration with Maison Charles, a lighting manufacturer.
