Description
Jennens & Bettridge ebonised wood papier mâché side table
English, c. 1840
Height 72cm, diameter 63cm
The table surface has been japanned, meaning that it has been applied with layers of thick black varnish in imitation of Japanese lacquer. It also features a papier mâché decoration on the top, showing a still life scene with fruit, a knife, a silver cup and a glass decanter with wine. The scene is shown within a gilt border with floral decorations. The table's ebonised central support is similarly parcel gilt and set on a triform base, which is stamped 'JENNENS & BETTRIDGE'.
