Brazilian Modern Coffee Table in Hardwood & Glass, Joaquim Tenreiro, 1950s
-
Description
Available today in NYC with free domestic shipping included, this exquisite coffee table, designed by Joaquim Tenreiro in the 1950s is nothing less than spectacular!
The piece showcases a captivating composition, entirely crafted from Brazilian Rosewood, commonly referred to as Jacaranda, and adorned with a sophisticated embedded opaque glass surface. The table showcases four delicate legs that connect to wooden beams, further enhancing its elegant design. Notably, this coffee table is featured in Joaquim Tenreiro's book, as showcased in one of the accompanying images. The wood has been masterfully restored, ensuring its excellent condition, and the original glass surface remains pristine.
What makes this table so special are three things: Elegance in its simplicity. Quality of the woodwork. Traces of Tenreiros work can be seen across the legs, the joints and the wood itself. And thirdly, its size, with 83” in width and 30” in depth.
The piece is displayed next to a large sofa with arms by Liceu de Artes and an armchair by Geraldo de Barros also from the fifties and the convo looks spectacular. A classic beauty like this will look awesome not only in any mid-century home but a modern, contemporary or country environment.
About the designer:
Joaquim Tenreiro was born in Portugal in 1906 but spent most of his life and career in Brazil, where he became one of the country's most celebrated furniture designers. He started his career as a cabinetmaker and set up his own furniture workshop in 1943.
He quickly gained recognition for his innovative designs and his use of traditional Brazilian materials like cane and jacaranda wood. His work was heavily influenced by past furniture-making techniques and emphasized the importance of technical mastery, aesthetic experience, craftsmanship, and cultural context.
He often used clean, simple lines and geometric shapes in his furniture designs, which were a departure from the ornate and heavily decorated pieces that were popular at the time. His work was also notable for its functionality and practicality, as he believed that furniture should be both beautiful and useful. Tenreiro retired from furniture design in the late 1960s to focus on painting and sculpture, but his legacy in furniture design lives on. He died in Itapira, Brazil in 1992 at the age of 86. -
