Low Brutalist Coffee Table with Slate Tabletop, Spain 1970s
-
Description
Brutalist furniture pieces stand as a testament to the incredible visual qualities obtained through the marriage of raw aesthetics and functionality. The Brutalist movement showcased how bold forms and the organic character of imperfect materials can beautifully transform into standout pieces through the creativity of skilled craftsmen.
Crafted from robust and durable slate, this coffee table is a striking embodiment of the Brutalist movement's principles – simplicity, honesty, and an unapologetic celebration of materials. The movement’s celebration of organic materials is highlighted in this coffee table. The asymmetric rectangular top is strikingly raw, made from the fine grained stone known as slate; a durable material resistant to pressure, shock or bending, with an appealing pattern and textural surface. As a result, the impression is elemental and unique, particularly through the stone’s natural imperfections. Staying true to the Brutalist use of materials, the base of the piece is constructed out of similarly unpolished dark wood, as natural and it gets. The base takes a cross shape, with the four sides providing ample support and stability to the piece. The combination of materials and rough surface makes this table a stylish statement, a conversation starter, and a timeless addition that will elevate the aesthetics of any space it occupies.
Coffee tables, in general, serve as design staples in living spaces for a multitude of reasons: beyond their utilitarian function of providing a surface for drinks and books. Coffee tables anchor a room, creating a focal point around which furniture and activity revolve.
