Description
A striking Art Deco style console table combining a Macassar ebony veneer body with a faux shagreen (stingray-embossed leather) inset top, bordered in a contrasting dark banding. The rectangular top sits above a sculptural U-shaped pedestal base, its curved supports meeting at a stepped brass-accented stretcher and resting on a substantial rectangular plinth base — a design directly rooted in the sweeping, geometric forms popularized during the French Art Deco period of the 1920s–30s.
The apron houses two fitted drawers, their fronts veneered to blend seamlessly into the Macassar striping when closed, offering discreet storage without disrupting the clean lines of the design. The rich striped grain of the Macassar veneer is used throughout, unifying the top, apron, base, and plinth, while the pale shagreen panel offers striking tonal and textural contrast against the dark wood.
Produced by Maitland-Smith, this piece reflects the maker's tradition of reinterpreting Art Deco forms with luxury materials and fine veneer work. The table's low, elongated proportions, dual drawers, and dramatic curved base make it well suited as a functional entry console or sofa table, equally at home in a period interior or a contemporary space seeking Deco glamour. -
