Napoleon III Ovular Dining Table with Nero Portoro Marble Top
France, late 19th century
30 5/8" H x 41 1/8" D x 71 3/8" W, 25 1/2" H to underside of the apron
French Napoleon III oval dining table in the Louis XVI taste, with white-painted base and black lacquered accenting. The oval marble top, possibly Nero Portoro or related black marble, has subtle ochre and gold veining. Plain apron raised on tapering fluted legs with carved acanthus capitals, anthemion knee ornament, water-leaf carving at the ankles, and toupie feet.
Condition: Painted surface is later, wear and rubbing throughout. Numerous large chips around the edges of the marble.
