Description
An exceptional and unique carved walnut dining table with Rosso Fiorentino marble top, design by Osvaldo Borsani, produced by Arredamenti Borsani Varedo, 1940s.
Osvaldo Borsani, heir to a long-standing tradition of fine cabinetmaking, distinguished himself by blending artisanal excellence with a forward-thinking design philosophy. His creations go beyond fleeting trends, embodying a refined aesthetic vision where craftsmanship and innovation converge. Many of his pieces, including this table, reflect an artistry that elevates them beyond mere furnishings, making them timeless expressions of design.
This carved walnut table, distinguished by its striking Rosso Fiorentino marble top, suggests an important original commission. Likely conceived for a grand dining hall, it now lends itself to various settings, from a meeting table to an executive desk. The tabletop, over 3 cm thick, is softened by a rounded molding that enhances the stone’s quality even in cross-section.
Borsani designed the base with four elegantly curved legs that seem to rise from the ground, effortlessly supporting the marble. Their organic form reflects his sensitivity to the late Art Nouveau tradition, while also fully embracing the principles of Italian Rationalism. The finely carved surface, though evoking a rough, irregular texture—perhaps reminiscent of the marks left by hand tools, a subconscious reference to Borsani’s early years—enriches the piece, liberating it from an overly bourgeois rigor.
Produced in the early 1940s at the Varedo workshops, the table has been fully restored and refinished, and it remains in overall good condition. A certificate of authenticity from the Borsani archive can be issued upon request.
