Pair of English Renaissance Revival Side Tables
-
Description
This stunning pair of Renaissance Revival ebonized and marble-top tables, with impressive ormolu mountings throughout, are from Victorian England, c.1870’s. They feature carved white marble tops which screw into the beautifully turned and fluted standard above tripodal bases having exquisite ormolu mounts and finials supported by turned three-arm stretchers. When Victoria became queen of England in 1837, the furniture world was energized by new possibilities which translated into revivals of previous styles such as this, as well as Rococo and Gothic, among others. The Renaissance Revival style is often considered a reaction to the Rococo Revival, even though it was in use as early as 1850. It is characterized by an eclectic use of both Renaissance and 18th-century Neoclassical motifs on straight-lined forms loosely based on 16th-century French models. Please refer to the detailed images provided.
