Pierre Chapo (1927–1987) stands among the most important figures of postwar French design. Trained as an architect at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he combined a deep respect for traditional craftsmanship with modernist principles of proportion and construction. After travelling extensively through Scandinavia and the Americas, he founded Société Chapo with his wife Nicole in 1957. Elm became his preferred material, valued for its strength and expressive grain, and his designs were guided by the principles of material, form, and function, often informed by the golden ratio.
