Provenance: Private Collection; Elliott and Grace Snyder, Massachusetts.
The Wethersfield Queen Anne style of furniture making is the earliest of Hartford County’s golden age, originating around 1730. This dressing table has Wethersfield style attributes characterized by forms based on cyma curves, scalloping, and s-curves, as seen here on the legs and skirt. The carving on Wethersfield pieces is usually minimal with either shells or four-lobbed pinwheels known as “fylfot.” High chests and dressing tables from this area have been described as “sensuous and feminine” due to their beauty, grace, and balance.
