Rare Anglo-Chinese Rosewood Tripod Tea Table, c. 1760

$ 28,000
  • Description
    Rare Anglo-Chinese Rosewood Tripod Tea Table
    China, in the English taste, circa 1760

    Distinguished by its elegant proportions and finely worked turning, the table features a scalloped circular top with a molded edge and pierced gallery supported by delicate baluster turnings above the original birdcage mechanism. The fluted baluster-form standard rises from three cabriole legs with carved knees terminating in finely executed ball-and-claw feet. Exceptionally vivid rosewood grain throughout further enhances the sculptural quality of the piece.

    The combination of Chinese craftsmanship and English Georgian design gives the table a particularly refined and cosmopolitan character. Furniture of this type was often produced on special order for Western merchants and officials connected with the British East India Company and intended for use in Canton, Macao, or other trading outposts in the East.¹

    Ideal beside a chair, sofa, or bed, the table functions equally well as a practical occasional table or as a sculptural accent within an interior. Its compact scale, elegant silhouette, and richly figured surface allow it to integrate effortlessly into both traditional and contemporary settings.
