Description
A particularly rare example of English, green japanning, a term describing the copying of Chinese lacquer work by English Craftsmen in the 18th Century. The undercarriage having an extraordinary mix of Thomas Chippendale and Strawberry Hill. The top richly decorated with a reserve enclosing a chinoiserie scene of figures, animals and flowers above pierced lattice ends, on bamboo moulded legs and castors. In the 18th Century it was not unusual for lacquer work to be broken down and used as decoration generally for other important pieces of furniture, as is the case for this pembroke table. Please see "LITERATURE" report.
Provenance:
Mawley Hall, Shropshire. Seat of Sir Edward Blount.
Considered one of the finest houses in England. -
