Description
Designed in 1960, the Alex coffee table is among the most refined expressions of Sergio Rodrigues’ contribution to twentieth-century design. The sculptural base is composed of intersecting curved elements arranged around a central support, creating a dynamic architectural composition that appears different from every viewpoint. A circular glass top rests lightly above the structure, allowing the construction itself to remain the visual focus. The generous proportions comfortably accommodate four to six people in a lounge setting.
Widely regarded as the father of modern Brazilian furniture, Sergio Rodrigues (1927–2014) played a pivotal role in defining a distinctly Brazilian design language during the post-war period. Rejecting strict European modernist principles, he developed furniture that combined architectural sophistication with warmth, comfort and a deep appreciation for local craftsmanship. Through his company Oca, founded in Rio de Janeiro in 1955, Rodrigues produced some of the most influential works of Latin American modernism, many of which are now represented in major museum collections worldwide.
The Alex table exemplifies this vision, balancing structural clarity with sculptural presence and demonstrating the designer’s remarkable ability to transform functional furniture into enduring works of design culture. -
