Description
A striking Swedish Empire oval center table, circa 1830, distinguished by its bold architectural form and richly carved pedestal base. Crafted during the first half of the 19th century, the table embodies the restrained grandeur and sculptural elegance that define Scandinavian interpretations of the Empire period.
The generous oval top is finished in a dramatic deep charcoal-black tone, accented by a beautifully carved twist-molded rope edge that adds movement and refinement to the silhouette. A discreet frieze drawer, complete with original escutcheon, offers practical functionality while preserving the clean symmetry of the design.
The table is raised on an impressive central pedestal with fluted support, flowing into four highly carved scrolling legs adorned with acanthus-inspired detailing and terminating in original casters. The dynamic base gives the piece exceptional visual presence from every angle, making it ideal as a center table in an entry, library, or sitting room, where the craftsmanship can be fully appreciated.
Its strong neoclassical lines, dark finish, and monumental yet elegant proportions make it a versatile statement piece that layers beautifully into both traditional and more contemporary interiors. A superb example of Swedish Empire craftsmanship, combining decorative impact with timeless functionality.
This is an antique and having been around for a long time, it will show signs of wear. Antique pieces have very much sought-after character and associated flaws. Please review photos for condition & contact us with questions! -
