Swedish Baroque Style Cerused Oak Side Table with Barley-Twist Legs, early 1920s

Price Upon Request
  • Description
This unique side table was made in Sweden, circa 1920, by an unknown maker. The striking design draws on Baroque furniture traditions, seen in the barley-twist turned legs and the trestle base with shaped, scrolled feet. At the same time, its use of solid oak and simplicity of form echo the Swedish sportstuge tradition popularized by Axel Einar Hjorth, where the natural beauty of the material took precedence over ornament.

The rectangular top sits on two boldly carved, spiral-twist legs, joined by a straight stretcher and resting on wide, shaped feet. The oak has a cerused finish, highlighting the natural grain. With its generous and sturdy proportions, the table works equally well as a substantial side table, a sofa table, or an occasional table in a living space.

The table is in good, original condition with wear consistent with age and use. Age-related patina, including light drying cracks and small surface scratches, adds to its character and is very much in keeping with the piece’s rustic, hand-carved charm.
