Description
An exceptional, highly collectible architectural statement piece, this rare variation of Vladimir Kagan’s iconic "Tic-Tac-Toe" design effortlessly bridges mid-century ingenuity and sculptural glamour.
Crafted in rich, deeply grained rosewood, the table sits atop a clean acrylic/lucite cube base that gives the substantial wood top a weightless, floating appearance. Engineered with clever versatility, each side panel seamlessly unfolds to expand the table from a compact 20" x 20" x 18" H cube into a sprawling 42" x 42" x 18" H square coffee table.
This piece retains its original foil label, confirming its provenance directly from "The Workshops of Vladimir Kagan Designs - New York."
The table will be delivered professionally refinished by our master restorers, highlighting the natural depth and figure of the rosewood while ensuring the lucite base and mechanical hinges operate smoothly. It will arrive in wonderful vintage condition, fully restored and ready for immediate display.
Provenance: The Marge Scheuer Collection
This piece comes directly from the estate of Marge Scheuer, a distinguished New York art collector, philanthropist, and prominent figure in the post-war American art world. Known for her keen eye and passionate patronage, Scheuer curated an extraordinary collection of mid-century design, fine art, and modern masterworks. Items from her collection represent a rare standard of provenance, reflecting decades of connoisseurship at the highest level of the New York art scene.
Vladimir Kagan didn't just design furniture—he essentially invented the concept of modern luxury seating. Born in Germany and raised in New York, Kagan was a pioneer of organic modernism, famous for swapping rigid, boxy mid-century shapes for sensual, sweeping curves that hugged the human body. His iconic designs (like the legendary Serpentine Cloud Sofa) became absolute status symbols for mid-century tastemakers, celebrities, and top-tier art collectors. Kagan had a knack for pairing warm, rich hardwoods like rosewood and walnut with futuristic materials like lucite and chrome, creating timeless, sculptural showstoppers that still completely rule high-end interiors today.
This coffee table, as photographed alongside Pierre Jeanneret chairs, clearly holds its own in any mid century modern or contemporary environment. We currently have the table alongside a Vladimir Kagan rosewood credenza, as well as a Charles Hollis Jones sofa, and not only does this coffee table hold its own, it turly steals the show! An epic collectors piece that is just as chic today as it was when it was created in the 1960's. -
