Description
The duo of Robert Guillerme and Jacques Chambron and their company, Votre Maison denote a landmark of French mid-century design history. Their focus was as keenly attuned to functionality as to the creation of innovative design. For the pair of designers, the home was envisioned as a place where the family could live both comfortably and in aesthetic harmony. Guillerme, who designed most of the work, possessed a limitless creative ambition, producing designs for everything from grand dressers and sideboards to sculptural bedside tables like this pair.
This pair’s aesthetic is expressed through clean lines and geometric precision, while creating a harmonious balance between form and function. The oak construction showcases the skillful artistry of the design duo while highlighting great balance of lines. In mid-20th century design, the use of wood held a special significance; it was not merely a material choice, but a philosophy that emphasized the natural and organic over the ornate and extravagant. Moreover, in a rather distinctive way, softness and tradition merge in these tables. The light oak wood creates a sense of lightness, while also projecting an air of strength and solidity. Oak has been the defining material for European furniture for centuries thanks to its durabilty, additionally, oak’s pattern is beloved for its versatility. The tabletops, although they are small, they still showcase the unique qualities of the wood, while also providing functional space for the utilitarian function. The tables are elemental thanks to the oak and interesting construction, the angularity of the tops and elegantly sculpted bases still provide a sense of gentleness. It is the well measured tension between the shapes that make the design eye-catching and infinitely interesting, allowing this pair to fit well in a modern interior, as well as in a minimalist or rustic space.
Not only did Votre Maison produce over two thousand models during the latter half of the twentieth century, its output also served as a model for a vast field of liveable contemporaneous design. This steady output of beautiful furniture bucked convention not merely in the equal emphasis Guillerme et Chambron placed on function and aesthetics, but in the almost paradoxical creation of a consistent style that was as staid as it was arresting.
