Svend Aage Madsen

Danish
Svend Aage Madsen is a Danish furniture designer whose work emerged prominently in the 1950s and 1960s, although biographical details about his life remain scarce.

Madsen’s designs epitomize the Danish modern aesthetic: he favored rich teak and rosewood, clean organic silhouettes, and minimal decorative detailing. His pieces are distinguished by features such as “boomerang” style legs, sloped or arching desk drawers, and “floating” desktop surfaces.

A significant portion of his output includes desks manufactured for Danish makers like H.P. Hansen and Sigurd Hansen. Madsen also designed dining tables, sideboards, nesting tables, credenzas, dressing tables, and bedside furniture for companies such as K. Knudsen & Søn, Karl Lindegaard, Allesø Møbelfabrik, and Falster Møbelfabrik.

Though his personal history remains largely undocumented, Madsen’s work is now recognized and sought after by vintage furniture collectors and Danish modern enthusiasts as a refined example of post-war Scandinavian design.
