Markham Roberts, a New York based interior designer, has been called “a master of timeless American style” by Vogue. Known for his ability to work in any design vernacular, Markham brings a modern approach to classic design. His work is not defined by signature gimmicks or design trends, but rather by a distinct refinement and subtlety that is largely unknown today. Using an inventive combination of layered pattern and color as well as a bold juxtaposition of fine furniture and works of art from around the world, his interiors have been described by House Beautiful as “the very definition of chic.”
Born in Indianapolis, Markham graduated from Brown University, and trained with the late Mark Hampton for six years, before opening his own firm in 1997. Markham has earned the reputation as one of the top decorators of his generation. Markham Roberts and his work have been published in Architectural Digest, Domino, Elle Decor, House Beautiful, House & Garden, Southern Accents, Town & Country, and The New York Times. He has been named to the AD100.
Markham’s monograph, Decorating: The Way I See It, published by The Vendome Press, showcases his refreshing approach to interior decoration, taking readers step-by-step through the design process. In vast New York City apartments, historic estates on Long Island, ocean-side Florida mansions, stately Southern and Mid-Western houses, rustic Montana ski retreats, and modern Puget Sound compounds, readers will see his diversity and sophistication as a decorator exhibited through forty distinct examples of his work. Finally, Markham puts all of the pieces together, using his own country house, a nineteenth century gentleman’s farm in the Hudson Valley, as example.
