Portrait of a Gentleman Seated in a Painted Chair Holding a Book
Probably New York, ca. 1836-1840.
36-1/2" x 31-1/2".
Condition: Lined, scattered in-painting in background areas. In a period gilt frame.
This charming and handsome portrait with the contrasting dark background and brilliant patches of bright colors was typical of Phillip's work during the period when he returned to New York State. -
