Adolf Loos
Austrian, 1870 - 1933
Adolf Loos (1870–1933) was a pioneering Austrian architect and designer whose radical ideas helped shape modern architecture and design. Best known for his minimalist aesthetic and strong opposition to ornamentation, Loos believed that form should follow function. His influential essay Ornament and Crime challenged the decorative excesses of his time and laid the groundwork for modernist principles. Loos designed elegant, restrained interiors and furnishings characterized by clean lines, rich materials, and impeccable proportions. His legacy endures in contemporary architecture and design philosophy around the world.
