Description
Edward Wormley designed this outstanding illuminated shelving unit model 5455 for Dunbar in mahogany with brass hardware. This shelving unit is the perfect mixture of elegance and Industrial engineering. The six graduated adjustable shelves are lit by a three light incandescent lighting system concealed under the top of the frame. Grooves fashioned into the underside keep the shelves in place. Industrial tension wires and brass poles are used for balance and support as well as design. This shelving unit is in excellent condition. In 1931, Edward Wormley’ began his relationship with Dunbar. By 1944 he became the Director of Design and held the title through the 1960s. Beginning in 1950, Edward Wormley’s participation in MOMA’s Good Design Exhibitions helped to cement his reputation as a designer of great importance.
