Description
Originally designed and handmade by Tony Duquette for his solo exhibition in Los Angeles in 1952, the abalone chandelier exemplified Duquette's affection for things glamorous and exotic. After the exhibition, the chandelier was moved to the Charles and Palmer Ducommun home in Bel Air, where it remained for many years.
In 2008, in collaboration with Hutton Wilkinson and the Tony Duquette Foundation, Baker Furniture introduced the new Tony Duquette collection of furniture and accessories, and Among them, the Abalone chandelier after its original design. It is executed in paint-decorated metal, abalone shell, and glass beads, with an all-over fanciful shell and bursting vine motif. The leaf-shaped canopy is suspended by a single column with numerous 'branches' terminating in glass bead finials interspersed with abalone shells, the whole terminating in a glass drop finial centering curved arms. The chandelier takes 12 bulbs. It measures 63" H from canopy, and the chandelier itself is 38" H x 28" in diameter. -
