Erwan Boulloud was born in France in 1973, and graduated from the prestigious École Boulle in 1995. After graduation, he held positions as set designer for several major museums in Paris including the Louvre, The Museum of Natural History and the CNAM (National Conservatory of Arts and Crafts). He then worked in the ateliers of renowned contemporary furniture artists Hubert Le Gall and Hervé van der Straeten. In 2003, Boulloud opened his own studio, where he creates very limited edition and one-off sculptural furniture. A number of his pieces are designed as sculpture first, but then open to reveal a functional core - for example, a cabinet that appears to be pierced by a chunk of actual meteorite, and opens to reveal a Christian Louboutin-like scarlet interior of asymmetrical shelves. Boulloud’s designs combine geometric precision with homage to the natural world, a play of fissures and cracks, concentric waves and ripples, echoes and biomorphic forms evoking cell division. He employs the exacting and meticulous heritage craft of Boulle marquetry and executes his designs in a variety of metals - brass, steel, aluminum, which he might encrust with precious minerals such as ametrine or lapis lazuli, or combine with concrete, each piece a celebration of materiality, craft and concept, each piece inspiring the next in a creative continuum.
