Description
Each table features a dramatic freeform top of banded onyx, displaying swirling hues of amber, honey, rust, and cream. Natural concentric rings, crystalline inclusions, and rugged edges emphasize the raw beauty of the stone. Resting on architectural bases of ash plywood with veneer, the design employs vertical slats rising from square plinths, creating a rhythmic geometry that contrasts elegantly with the irregularity of the stone tops.
These tables were conceived for a site-specific context, intended to harmonize with the rugged yet refined character of their Sierra Nevada setting. The combination of richly patterned stone and architectural wood bases reflects mid-century modernism’s fascination with natural materials and structural clarity.
While their exact origin remains elusive, the pair’s provenance as commissioned furnishings for a modernist retreat underscores their rarity and cultural significance. Both sculptural and functional, they can serve as side tables, pedestals for display, or as statement pieces in contemporary interiors.
A compelling example of California custom design, these tables stand as functional art objects, rooted in modernist ideals and the beauty of natural material.
The tables are in excellent vintage condition. -
