Regency Rosewood Writing Slope, England c. 1820-35

This is a remarkable writing slope remaining in superb original condition throughout. The rosewood veneers are chosen carefully for their chaotic and very pleasing swirling grains, these applied in such a way that they flow from the upper to the lower portion seamlessly. An original key with tassel opens the brass lock, allowing the desk to be opened into a full writing slope; two inkwells (originality unknown) flank small sloped compartments and a longer capped box. By flipping a small brass tab, the document compartment is revealed in the lower portion of the slope; a small tab of leather allows the upper compartment to be easily opened. A long steel pin can be lifted from the frame to allow access to the full length drawer, this beautifully constructed with tight hand dovetailing in the thin golden oak secondaries.

It is an inordinately high quality and beautifully functional acquisition for anyone passionate about fine English antiques.
