Description
Thomas Moran (1837-1926) - Venice
20 x 30 inches
Oil on canvas
Signed and dated T over M Moran 1897 lower right
Thomas Moran’s favorite place to paint was Venice, Italy. He loved it so much that on his first trip in 1886 he had a gondola boat from the Grand Canal in Venice shipped back to his home in East Hampton, New York. He showed at least one or two Venetian paintings at every National Academy Exhibition. William H. Holmes, curator of The National Collection Of Fine Arts stated in 1919, “Moran is a Marvel and I consider him the greatest landscape painter the world has ever known!”
