Jean-Baptiste Pillement was born in Lyon was a painter and designer who was known for his delicate landscapes, and who was an influential artist in the Rococo style. He spent much of his career abroad, moving from Paris to Lisbon, and then to England, where he spent 8 years developing his landscape technique, inspired by the work of painter Nicolaes Berchem. Pillement then went on to Vienna and in 1765 he went to Warsaw, decorating the Royal Castle and the Ujazdowski Castle, his largest project. He also worked in Saint Petersburg, and in Italy. At the end of his life Pillement returned to Lyon, where he designed for the silk industry and gave lessons in the Academy founded by Napoleon. -
