Since its founding in 1875, the Art Students League has been instrumental in shaping the American art scene and raising its stature in the international art world. Many renowned artists have trained and taught at the League including Childe Hassam, Norman Rockwell, Jackson Pollock, Georgia O’Keeffe, Louise Nevelson, James Rosenquist, Mark Rothko, Donald Judd, Cy Twombly, Robert Rauschenberg and Ai Weiwei. In 1951 The Metropolitan Museum of Art held a major Art Students League exhibition for the League’s 75th anniversary. Fifty-eight years later, Incollect has organized a powerful museum quality marketplace celebrating the teachers at the League, the true unsung heroes of the American art scene.
The League of Masters: Past & Present: Works by The Art Students League Teachers and Students celebrates the League’s continuing tradition of supporting artists, exhibiting significant works by a few past League masters such as Hans Hofmann, Burgoyne Diller and Will Barnet, and shifts forward to focus on the diversity and talent of the preeminent contemporary League instructors working today, ranging in ages from 35–96.
