Description
Joe Colombo designed the Model 4801 chair from three curved pieces bent beech plywood. Colombo’s innovative idea was to design a lounge chair that could simply slot togehter with no screws or fasteners of any kind. The weight of the sitter then holds it in place. Produced by Kartell of Italy in 1963-1964 it is an icon of Italian Modernism by the master of Italian Space Age design. Joe Colombo created one of Kartell’s few pieces of non-plastic furniture, the 4801 chair, which sits low to the ground and comprised of just three curved pieces of plywood. In 2012, Kartell reissued the chair in plastic. The lacquer is excellent condition. It is stamped with the serial number 34 making it a rare first edition.

Pavilion is the collective vision of Deborah Colman and Neil Kraus, both graduates of the master of fine arts program at the Art Institute of Chicago. From a longstanding interest in art and design, frequent buying trips to France and Italy have influenced the direction of the gallery to offer items that are not easily sourced in Chicago and United States. Postwar design has been the focus for 18 yrs and we also look forward to new design that crosses boundaries and dialogues as well to the past
