Description
Herman Henry Wessel (1878–1969)
A Portrait of a Lady with Red Nails Wearing a Striped Blouse and Floppy Hat, circa 1940.
Oil on canvas, 35.25 in. x 30.25 in. framed
Signed on the reverse: "Mr. Wessel"
On the reverse also inscribed, "R. Nestor", most likely the sitter.
Mr. Wessel was a prominent artist and teacher from Cincinnati, Ohio. He studied with Frank Duveneck and at the Royal Academy in Munich and at the Academies Julian and Colarossi in Paris. In 1908, he returned to Cincinnati and began a 40-year teaching career at the Academy. -
