19th Century ormolu and marble mantel clock

Description
In its unusual and beautiful design, this sumptuous mantel clock effortlessly transcends the boundaries between sculpture, clockmaking and objet de vertu. The piece is modelled as a patinated bronze winged putto dangling the gilt bronze clock case from a naturalistically-cast gilt bronze ribbon, with a drumstick in its other hand.

The putto is also shown sitting on a circular gilt bronze pedestal, decorated with fluting, trailing vines and rose-heads. The piece is set on a square shaped red marble base which is mounted with gilt bronze beading and foliate motifs.

The circular enamel clock dial bears Roman numerals as well as a retailer's stamp for Jacques Gudin in Paris, a prestigious vendor of fine clocks and watches during the 19th Century.
