Description
Large antique French Orientalist oil Painting of the Nile by Berchère
French, 1872
Canvas: Height 63cm, width 96cm
Frame: Height 78cm, width 110cm, depth 4cm
A beautifully rendered Orientalist oil painting by celebrated French artist Narcisse Berchère (1819–1891), this atmospheric work captures a serene sunset along the banks of the Nile in Badrashin, Egypt.
The tranquil glow of dusk sets the tone for this richly detailed composition, where Berchère masterfully contrasts the peaceful ambience of a summer evening with the subtle movement of daily life along the river. His skilled brushwork and sensitive use of colour harmoniously evoke the golden light of sunset, blending warm tones into a soft, radiant sky.
The expansive surface of the Nile takes centre stage, shimmering in the fading light. A traditional wooden boat is gently drawn toward the shore by two figures. Aboard the vessel, additional individuals can be seen, likely fishermen concluding their day’s labour.
On the riverbank, small groups of people are engaged in routine activities. Some are collecting water in large terracotta pots carried atop their heads; others are washing garments at the water’s edge. Further back, a gathering encircles a modest fire, possibly cooking a fresh catch from the river.
Framing the composition are tall, verdant palm trees, their rhythmic placement adding depth and structure. A gentle hill rises beyond, dotted with figures making their way upward, while a row of docked boats stands quietly before the greenery, their tall masts silhouetted against the glowing sky, ready for use by local fishermen or traders.
The canvas is signed in the lower right ‘Bedrechein / Berchère. 1872’ and is presented in an intricately carved giltwood frame.
With its compelling subject matter and timeless aesthetic, it is a distinguished and evocative addition to any fine art collection.
