Evelyn Faherty (1919 – 2015)

Considered one of the last artists with direct ties to the first generation of Pennsylvania Impressionists or the “New Hope School”, Evelyn Faherty was born in 1919 in Wertsville, East Amwell, New Jersey. After attending high school, she began studying under Pennsylvania Impressionist painters, John Folinsbee:

“Mr. Folinsbee told me I had something. It was very flattering that he told me that. He thought I was really going to do great things. I was a lot younger then, but I loved doing what I did. That’s all it was. I always just loved to paint.” –Evelyn Faherty

Faherty also studied under Pennsylvania Impressionist, Harry Leith-Ross. In 1956, Leith-Ross wrote The Landscape Painter’s Manuel which profoundly affected Faherty’s approach to painting.

Faherty believed she received her greatest inspiration, though, from Edward Redfield, one of the premiere figures among the Pennsylvania Impressionists. His inspiration helped Faherty capture the true essence of the landscapes of Bucks County, the Delaware River and the Hopewell (NJ) Valley.

Despite the rigorous urging of her mentors to pursue a wider audience and enter the major exhibitions and galleries of Philadelphia and New York, Evelyn Faherty decided to focus on developing her craft in the local artist community. This commitment to the Delaware River community is clear in her colorful depictions of the area’s beautiful scenery. She later moved to a large farm in Pennington, New Jersey called “Partner’s Choice” where she helped operate the property and continued to paint. After her husband’s death in 1995, Faherty began to spend winters in Sarasota, Florida but remained in Bucks County for the rest of the year until her death in Newtown, PA in 2015.

She has exhibited at such institutions as the James A. Michener Art Museum, Phillips Mill, the New Jersey State Museum, and the Trenton Museum.
