Elizabeth Seaver "Indian Chief and Family" ceramic, circa 1930.

$ 4,500
  • Description
    This remarkable ceramic sculpture was crafted by American artists Elisabeth Andersen Seaver, one of the famous Cleveland School ceramicists. This piece depicts an Indian chief with full feather headdress alongside his wife and child all in snowy-white dress. Seaver skillfully contrasts the ivory, blue and deep pink tones of her glazes with areas of transparent glaze to reveal the lovely, ruddy color of the clay. Seaver is probably best known for the designs she created for the Cowan Studios. The Cowan Studios commisioned designs from great sculptors of the day such as Waylande Gregory and Viktor Schreckengost.
