Description
Beautifully finished in an ivory-hued glaze, this ambitious and rare sculptural grouping of a Pan and Nymph with flute and cymbal was sculpted by Harald Salomon for the famed Rörstrand porcelain works in Sweden. Salomon sculpted a number of nude figures for Rörstrand in the 1940s, many with a mythological theme, but this is the largest and most complex of his works. The artist had a fascinating pan-Scandinavian career, born in Norway, working for much of his life in Denmark, and also creating a series of pieces for producers in Sweden. He is well known as a medalist, and his bas reliefs can be found at the British Museum, among other collections. The two nude figures rest on a separately cast and glazed scalloped base, indicating that this piece served as a centerpiece for a dining room or another public space in a grand home.
