Description
Stunning abstract sculpture in the shape of a totem by NP2, Turin, 1966. The sculpture is made of different kinds of metal (iron, steel, aluminium), polychromatic glass and wood. It is signed and dated on the back NP2 (Nerone-Patuzzi)
The Gruppo NP2 was founded by Nerone Ceccarelli (Pisa, 1937 - Paris 1996) and Giancarlo Patuzzi (both students of Carlo Scarpa in Venice) in 1962: together with other artists "they experimented new sources of poetic expression from materials". In 1964 Nerone called his brother, Piercarlo Ceccarelli, who until then had been interested in electronic data processing and business organization, to join the NP2 Group. The group's intent was to promote the integration of art in architecture. The presence of Piercarlo Ceccarelli proved to be fundamental during the early years of the Group, as he, with his managerial skills and working ties with the USA, became responsible for promoting ideas and organizational aspects. Most of the works of these years were signed by Patuzzi and Nerone, but they were certainly not alone: there were many artists who revolved around the group, always open to the search for new artistic frontiers. The participants shared the idea that "pure" art does not have any sense. Sculpture and painting must interpret spaces and become an integral part of daily life.
In the second half of the 1960s, the Gruppo received several commissions, both public and private for various works. And this is how their activity as a sculptors not linked to architecture began to evolve. In particular Nerone Ceccarelli, a multifaceted artist, used different techniques and materials. Particularly related to metal, many of his works were assembled or cast. The metal sheets were often painted or smoked with acetylene to create contrasts; obtaining chromatic effects also through the use of aniline, a material that darkens in contact with air. Nerone also used more constantly different kinds of wood that he transformed in abstract shapes treatening them with the use of a torch. -
