Description
A mask made of hardwood, with an indigenous repair and good usage patina on the outside and the inside... Despite featuring the incised tribal mark of the Chokwe people (so-called ‘Cingelyengelye’) on the forehead, the present mask must be attributed to the neighbouring tribe of the Lovale on the grounds of its delicate lines, a tendency toward naturalism, and a taste for round, complete forms. This wooden mask portraying a young female is danced after the initiation ceremonies.
