Description
Lacquered wood figure representing the deity Ashinaga, Japan, early 20th century.
Carved in wood and finished with a dark lacquer surface, highlighting the elongated limbs characteristic of this folkloric figure.
Ashinaga, often paired with his counterpart Tenaga, appears in Japanese legend as a supernatural being with extraordinarily long legs.
The sculpture reflects the continued interest in traditional mythological subjects during the late Meiji–Taishō period.
A decorative object combining folk narrative, skilled carving, and lacquer craftsmanship typical of early 20th-century Japanese art. -
