Description
An early 19th century canine portrait of a Wheaten or Lakeland Terrier on an exceptionally fine black lacquered and stenciled oval tole tray. The tray is inset on a complex 'later' eight legged bamboo-turned and spoon footed stand. The original stenciled diamond pattern of the tray's edge is repeated on the top ledge surface of the stand. The tray rests securely in the stand, and can be lifted out as desired. Painted 'tinware' or 'tole' is deemed folk art; though some pieces can be quite refined. Typically painted with black asphaltum, each piece is adorned with local scenic, floral, or personally significant motifs. Different regions bear varying characteristics. This tray's origin would likely be along the Scottish border; given the breed of terrier.
