French, late 19th Century
Dressing table: Height 167cm, width 124cm, depth 65cm
Chair: Height 95cm, width 44cm, depth 42cm
This elegant dressing table and chair set is designed in the late 19th Century French Neoclassical style, retailed by Parisian firm Au Gros Chêne. The dressing table is of rectangular form, with subtle cabriole legs, with scrolled ormolu sabots and foliate mounts to the shoulders. The table top features a chevron veneered pattern, with a protective glass covering overlaid on top. The apron of the table features three frieze drawers with ormolu ring handles. From the back of the tabletop, the backboard of the dressing table features a shaped frame with floral ormolu mounts, and an adjustable oval mirror surmounted with two flower-shaped ormolu lights.
The matching chair is conformingly designed, with similar legs and ormolu mounts. The seat and backrest are crafted from a rattan wicker material.
Au Gros Chêne were a popular Parisian furniture firm. Today, the site of 12 Rue Drouot where they were situated is occupied by the large auction house Hotel Drouot.
