This unsigned and undated British Sporting Art painting, which I call "Alert Hounds", is charming and evocative in its depiction of the nature of dogs. The painting is done on an 7.75" x 9.5" beveled pine panel. It shows five off-duty sporting dogs responding to a sound in the wall. It was painted circa 1895-1910, in the tradition of British sporting and animal art such as that done in England by John Emms (1843-1912) or Arthur Wardle (1864-1949) and their contemporaries. The painting is in a period ornate frame, although it is not original to the painting. The overall dimensions with the frame are listed above.

This anonymous artist captures the behavior and demeanor of the five hounds in a naturalistic manner. This type of dog-related art was very popular in the late Victorian and early Edwardian eras. It is a perfect gift today for a lover of dogs or collector of sporting art.
