Description
A Robert Lewis patinated chaise lounge hand crafted from copper pipe in the mid 1930s at his studio below the Old Mission Santa Barbara in Santa Barbara, California.
The center brace is quite rare and is an indication of the early manufacturing date of this copper chaise.
Later examples would have steel tube inserts to strengthen the frame and allow for streamlined arcs without this secondary and unusual additional brace.
This chaise had shadows of earlier cording on the frame though much of Robert Lewis's patio seating was originally purchased with canvas decking or rawhide webbing with the option of ordering secondary cushions for added comfort.
Robert Lewis started producing his outdoor and patio designs in 1932 concurrently with his representation in his Santa Barbara shop of another manufacturer of indoor /outdoor furniture Warren McArthur.
There are minor influences from McArthur but Robert Lewis would be a far greater influencer on a designer to follow him Walter Lamb.
The chaise is in very good condition. -
