Description
An exceptional Northern Italian Baroque intricately carved ebonized frame, inset with old mercury glass. The frame with cove carved 'ripple' molding and its original forged iron hook on the back. These style of frames are usually referred to as Dutch, but were actually more often made in Germany, Spain, or Italy and rarely made in Holland. The ebonized frames were an ideally suited to highlight colored or light filled paintings and provided a needed contrast in often dark 17th century interiors. Today, these frames provide a bold and dramatic sculptural statement piece for any interior style.
Northern Italy, circa 1680-1700
