Description
A glass desk obelisk shaped thermometer showing both the Reaumur and Fahrenheit scales on a porcelain backing with brilliant cut notched corners on all sides, mounted on a square stepped base.
The Réaumur scale was used widely in Europe, particularly in France, Germany and Russia. It was established in 1730 by the French naturalist René-Antoine Ferchault de Réaumur (1683–1757), with its zero set at the freezing point of water and its 80 degree mark at the boiling point of water at normal atmospheric pressure. By the late 19th century it had been supplanted by other systems, namely Celsius. -
